Paul

The heart is a thousand-stringed instrument that can only be tuned with love.
— Hafiz

One of the leading candidates for the official role as “that guy in the window” at Victor Rose, Paul is as much a part of the coffee shop as their beans, baked goods, and beautiful souls.

He personifies the day-to-day vibe at Victor Rose—quiet and unassuming, but easily engaged from a quick hello to a conversation that can run for a long time and cover deeply meaningful territory. Paul’s also a serious reader, and the book titles lying right next to his coffee are often great conversation starters.

People like Paul are what give any neighborhood coffee shop their importance. Familiar faces with meaningful stories behind them, seen on a regular basis, give us reassurance in uncertain times.

Tell us about yourself
I am a lifelong Pointe-Claire resident who currently works as a guide, focusing primarily on two areas of importance to society.

First, I support individuals, families, and communities in navigating their relationship with grief, dying, and death. As a death doula, I am blessed to have been hosting the regular “Death Over Coffee” conversations at Victor Rose since December 2022.

I also play the same role in supporting individuals—primarily men—on their journey towards a fuller way of life that includes physical and mental health, as well as working with them on their personal and professional lives.

How did you first discover Victor Rose? What drew you in initially?
I was introduced to Victor Rose when I was in the village with my daughters one afternoon, and was drawn in by the cozy yet vibrant atmosphere. The people, both the staff and the clients, make it feel like I am having coffee in my own home!

How would you describe the vibe at Victor Rose?
It has the great blend of being both “cool” and homey, and I love the artwork and other offerings that are always on display at Victor Rose.

Have you made any personal connections with anyone while you were at Victor Rose?
Absolutely. Through my regular visits but also through Death Over Coffee, I have come to know many people in the community, many of whom are now friends that I see not only at VR but elsewhere as well. Some have even become colleagues that I work with in some capacity or another.

Have you had any particularly interesting or inspiring moments while there?
ALL THE TIME! I go in the mornings, usually, and this is my time for reading poetry or philosophy, for journaling or just reflecting. I have had some wonderful ideas there, and every month at Death Over Coffee, it is an evening of one inspiring moment after another!

What’s your go-to drink and/or snack there?
Dark roast with oat milk! And my snacks are one of either gluten-free carrot cake, blueberry and zucchini loaf, or cranberry orange loaf. Too many good choices every day…

How does Victor Rose fit into your daily or weekly routine
Multiple times a week, for sure! It is a part of my morning routine as often as I can.
